Suggested Reading Levels

In an effort to serve our readers, especially those who are also teachers, we have offered a suggested reading level for each novella that we publish. These levels can be found by using the “Suggested Reading Level” filter on our novella page. They are also listed on the back covers of our recently published novellas, second editions, and revised editions.

All reading levels are based on feedback from students who were in classrooms using a communicative method of teaching for 120–170 hours per year. The given level suggests the year in which a reader might independently read, rather than translate, that particular novella.

However, since each individual acquires a unique range of vocabulary, no two classrooms are the same, and language proficiency does not progress at a consistent pace which can be divided by year, these levels should only be treated as suggestions.

Considered under a different system of categorization, nearly all of our novellas are written for readers of Latin and Greek whose reading proficiency levels range from novice-mid to intermediate-high, as defined by the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines. Some tiers of texts contained in tiered readers, and a very few novellas, venture into the advanced proficiency levels.
